What a great way to wake up. If only all days were all like this.

Nayuki from Kanon
Sleeping Nayuki, check. Animal print pyjamas, check. Large plush frog, check. Wonderful.

WHAT A LOVELY way to start the day. The sun is shining, it’s not too cold, and iTunes has just chucked out half ‘n hour of some of the best songs, including I’m Glad by Captain Beefheart, Making Plans For Nigel by XTC, No God No Religion by Spiritualised, Aladdin’s Story by Death in Vegas, Auto-Pilote by Lofofora and No Pain by New Model Army.

What’s great about them is that none are songs that I would have picked if I would have just chucked something on the CD player, so kudos to the iTunes random feature for once. Of course, it could equally have played six or so completely inappropriate tracks instead.

So anyway, why the Nayuki picture? Well, it’s all a big thanks to A***** ‘Wildarmsheero’ R******* for inviting me to participate in one of his podcasts (his ninth), along with Jeff Lawson of the Hop Step Jump blog. The subject was a kind of Kanon retrospective, which gave Jeff, A***** and myself a great chance to geek out for an hour. You can read more about the podcast here, as well as download it.

It was a completely new experience this. Not only have I never contributed to such a thing before but I very rarely get a chance to chat, as in using my mouth, to other anime fans, most of my conversation being via the computer. Having listened to the podcast first thing this morning, it was an interesting experience. For a start it was much better than I could have hoped, and I think there was some good discussion. Of course, now, my mind is flooding with things that I could have said, or maybe wanted to emphasise just that little bit more, but overall, I’m happy with the way things came out.

Podcasts and their video equivalent are something that I’ve considered myself from time to time but I’ve never looked upon myself as being a natural for this kind of endeavour. However, I may re-evaluate that after this event. Not that I thought I was outstanding, but it did hammer home the importance of preparation and practice. After all, you can only get better at these things… right?

  1. Yeah, I thought both you and Jeff did a great job. I’m only sad I wasn’t as fired up as I usually am. I was just so swapped with things to do this week that I haven’t had a chance to think about much.

But it came out pretty good, I think.

  2. I’ll listen to it, but only probably after I’ve finished watching Kanon. :P

  3. If A***** ever invites me to do another one then he needs to get a buzzer or something for everytime I say “I think”. Or maybe a slight electric shock transmitted down the line via Skype?

I also continue to struggle to pronounce Haruhi…

Considering that we talked for nearly an hour, IIRC there are surprisingly few spoilers.

  4. And I need to be shocked every time I say, “you know…” Geez. I generally don’t do that.

  5. Meh. I’m a man that hates being spoiled. Kills the fun.

Though will it be as fun as hearing you and Jeff talk? Probably not. It’s always interesting to hear how other people sound. :3

  6. You guys are kind of hard to understand sometimes. I’m still listening through it, but I have to stop short to get some work done. I’ll respond when I’ve fully deciphered whatever you guys were mumbling about. : p

  7. This show featured 33% extra British accent, so it should go down a storm in the US.

I was mumbling in the hope that you might think I was saying something really deep, intelligent and meaningful…
